How to Join
Joining the list is very easy. The command that needs to be sent is:
subscribe gemstone Your Name
The command should be sent to listserv@listserv.umd.edu.
When you join, you are sent a little pamphlet which looks very boring and does not seem to have anything interesting to say about the list itself. Do not discard it! Treat it like a warranty card -- no immediate value, but you never know when you might need it. You should make a new folder in your mail program for these little pamphlets and search it whenever you have an administrative question about a mailing list, instead of contacting the list owner directly.
How to Leave
You can leave the list at any time by sending a SIGNOFF command to the host server:
signoff gemstone
Send the SIGNOFF command to listserv@listserv.umd.edu.
To Send an Email Message
Messages sent to the Gemstone Listserv are sent directly to the Listserv editor who determines if messages will be posted. Only messages relevant to the WHOLE list and the Gemstone Program will be approved for posting.
To send an email message to all the people currently subscribed on the Gemstone list, just address your message to:
This is called "sending mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and ListServ makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address
(gemstone@listserv.umd.edu) is also called the "list address."
You must never try to send any command (e.g., subscribe or signoff commands) to gemstone@listserv.umd.edu, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed.
Rather all commands should be sent to the "LISTSERV address:" listserv@listserv.umd.edu.
