Guidelines and Procedures for Team Fundraising Outside
the University of Maryland
Attending professional conferences and visiting other university campuses and private companies can be an important aspect of conducting research. Also, teams may find it necessary to purchase materials with which to conduct their research. To the extent that these activities may enrich the team's research experience, the Gemstone Program is able to provide some financial support. Nevertheless, sometimes a team will need funding beyond that which Gemstone can provide. In these cases, the team may choose to solicit gifts from outside the University of Maryland. The following provides guidance and procedures for soliciting such funds.
Non-University of Maryland Funding
Any requests for gifts from outside the University of Maryland must first be submitted for approval to the Gemstone Program Director. He is required to coordinate all such requests with the University of Maryland 's Office of University Development, so that multiple groups within the University are not competing for funds from the same sources simultaneously.
Proposal
A proposal for soliciting non-university funding must include the following information:
- Name of the team
- Team research question
- Purpose of the materials for which funding is being requested
- Potential benefits to the team. Discuss the team's progress to date, ultimate goals, and how the requested materials will help the team reach those goals
- Please attach a detailed budget showing the costs for each of the items requested
- Information about whether the team is requesting support for these materials from anyone else
- The proposal must be signed by the team's mentor
Response
The Gemstone Program Director will attempt to respond to the team's request within 2 weeks of receiving the request. He is available to assist the team with its solicitation of outside funds; he will consult with the team and may be available to participate in the solicitation of funds.
